Katerine’s Origin is England of 900-1000 CE. Her Surname "Martel," has been said to mean "hammer". It is thought to be taken from the arts her family practiced. . Her family was in the business of fine metalwork and jewelry. A tradition which, until recently she continued.
Raised as an artisan within the borders of Northumbria she learned both negotiation and trade skills, Katerine enjoyed traveling abroad and trading or selling the family’s goods.
As time passed Katerine made the acquaintance of a group of men who traveled similar roads as she. They graciously allowed her to travel with them and gave aid when needed. The Consortium became as family to her and she ranged farther abroad each year.
In A.S. 39 Katerine was honored to become the Baroness of Adiantum.
Because her homeland was held by Viking kings her transition to a Rus life was easy. As Baroness she chose to dress in the style of her Baron Brutus Solamon. The style is Kievan Rus of 900 – 1000 C.E. In addition being a Rus Baroness she is able to take advantage of the Rus laws regarding women, property and land. Baroness Katerine has recently begun fighting and hopes to continue defending both the Barony and the Kingdom of An Tir. |
In mundane life Kate McKinlay spends her time restoring old buildings.
"I attended Bassist College for design and have enjoyed furthering my education from time to time at both the University of Oregon and Lane Community College."
"I have made my living as a silversmith and cut my own gemstones. That is how I began vending at SCA events many years ago."
When time allows she still vends at art shows up and down the west coast.
She has a cat named Vella.
